Student Innovators Inspire the Next Generation During the GYRI Forum
San Diego, CA – July 18, 2026 – The ESC Club proudly hosted the 2026 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) Winner Student Panel at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as part of the Global Youth and Robotics Innovation (GYRI) Forum. The event brought together students, parents, educators, and STEM enthusiasts for a unique opportunity to learn directly from some of America's top young app developers.
This special session highlighted the achievements of seven Congressional App Challenge winners from the past three years, representing five award-winning applications across multiple congressional districts. The panel demonstrated how students can transform innovative ideas into real-world technology solutions while developing leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurship skills.
ESC Club's Multi-Year Commitment to the Congressional App Challenge
As part of the opening presentation, ESC Club introduced its long-term commitment to promoting the Congressional App Challenge and encouraging students to participate year after year. Club members shared how many ESC students have participated in CAC multiple times, continuously improving their technical skills while mentoring younger students. Through workshops, peer mentoring, and community outreach, ESC Club has helped expand CAC participation across Southern California and beyond.
The audience also learned about ESC Club's broader STEM education initiatives, including coding workshops, MIT App Inventor training, robotics education, AI innovation programs, and multicultural STEM outreach.
Celebrating Student Innovation
The panel featured winning teams and representatives from five Congressional App Challenge projects:
Feed Me Smart (2023 CA-51 Winner, represented by Jonathan Han) helps families make healthier and more economical shopping decisions through a smart grocery and nutrition assistant.
MedCentral (2024 CA-25 Winner, represented by Alex Tang) is an AI-assisted healthcare management application designed for immigrants, seniors, and patients to organize medical information and understand healthcare instructions.
AgriVerse (2025 MI-07 Winner, represented by Vishwas Tattala and Brian Lee) is a digital agriculture platform connecting local farmers, volunteers, and communities while promoting sustainable farming practices.
Smart Recycling (2025 CA-25 Winner, represented by Zi Wang, Skye Chen, and Matthew Zhang) is an intelligent recycling assistant encouraging environmental sustainability through AI-powered waste classification and recycling education.
Agriconnect (2025 CA-52 Winner, represented by Joshua Wang) prevents food waste while educating future generations, celebrating cultural heritage, and empowering communities to help one another.
Throughout the panel, each team introduced their app, demonstrated key features, shared development experiences, and discussed lessons learned. Highlights included discovering the Congressional App Challenge, finding meaningful problems to solve, building apps from idea to prototype, working effectively as teams, managing schoolwork alongside development, preparing presentations and video submissions, offering advice for first-time participants, and discussing how CAC opened new STEM and leadership opportunities.
Insights from a Long-Time Mentor
Dr. Meng, a long-time mentor and senior Congressional App Challenge coach, shared valuable insights with students and parents about supporting student innovators, selecting meaningful community problems, developing long-term programming and AI skills, building strong teamwork and communication abilities, and using Congressional App Challenge as a pathway toward STEM education and career opportunities.
Live Q&A with the Audience
The event concluded with an interactive live Question & Answer session where audience members engaged with panelists about coding experience requirements, recommended programming platforms, project evaluation processes, building competitive portfolios, team responsibility division, development challenges faced by winners, and how winning CAC influenced college and career opportunities.
Following the formal session, many attendees continued conversations with student winners, exchanging ideas, seeking advice, and exploring collaboration opportunities.
